Avignon is one of the three main cities in Provence, along with Marseille and Aix-en-Provence; it became even more important city of Provence after 1308 when the Popes moved to Avignon. This radical move would prove a major influence and boost to the city. In 1308 Pope Clement V, a Frenchman, announced that the new home of the papacy was to be in Avignon. Avignon was a small town of 5,000 people and it on the borders of the only territory owned by the papacy to lie outside Italy so it was safe from the political problems. It was also on the border of France, who since the Pope was French, the French King was very powerful ally. Soon Avignon would grow larger than Rome, and become one of the wealthiest and most glittering cities of Europe. The city dripped gold and jewels, full of glamour. To many people, most notably the Italian Petrarch, Avignon symbolized greed, nepotism, corruption, abuse of power, and outrageous moral laxity. Avignon had 7 successive popes, each one totally different from his predecessor and successor. Avignon as we see it is essentially the same medieval city built by the Popes. The only major change is the construction of the Rue de la Republique along with the train station around 1850.The most iconic symbol of Avignon is the ramparts, the current ones built in 1358.
