About L'Oustal d'Olonzac

This classically elegant 19th century period property was formerly a wine domaine but will now seduce you with its secluded walled garden and indoor swimming pool. Located in the wine producing village of Olonzac in the heart of the Languedoc, you'll find a great selection of cafes, restaurants and shops nearby plus - naturally - the opportunity to taste some of the local wines.

This lovely property is ideal for those who want to experience rural French village life, but still want a choice of activities. It is situated in the centre of Olonzac but is remarkably private and secluded. In the summer, the garden is a bower of flowers that buzz with the hum of bees. Stretch out and relax in the wonderful hammock, or take a refreshing afternoon tea beneath the wisteria pergola. Upstairs is a terrace almost completely covered with fragrant jasmine and which makes another delightful spot to sit and enjoy the tranquillity of the location.

The large games room offers table tennis and snooker, satellite TV, gym machines, PlayStation XBox and Wii so teenagers will be happy. Nearby is a lake for swimming and tennis courts which means there's always something to do.

Just a mile away is the Lac de Jouarres - it's worth a visit for the scenery alone, but you'll also find opportunities for windsurfing, kayaking, boating, fishing and other watersports fromits shores. This is also the nearest beach for swimming, at only a 25 minute walk away. For sea swimming, the Mediterranean is a 35 minute drive away where Narbonne Plage or Valras-Plage greet you with endless vistas of golden sand to play or relax upon.

The garden is ideal for children, with high walls and gates providing a great deal of privacy for the large Mediterranean courtyard and outbuildings. The landscaped garden has mature plants, flowers and trees, in particular two magnificent plane trees which offer lovely shade for eating outdoors near the large barbecue area - which looks absolutely stunning when it's lit up at night.

Lockable, sliding glass doors lead from the garden to the indoor pool and on top of the barn you'll find a superb roof terrace with views over the village. Step out of the house gates and you'll be in the village!

Location and Map

This marker is for indication purpose only

The sun-baked Minervois region is bursting with history and spans the departments of the Hérault and the Aude. It's filled with ancient Cathar villages and vineyards under wide, open skies.

The village of Olonzac is the capital of the Minervois and is lively and energetic all year round, and on Tuesdays hosts one of the best weekly markets in the area. The village has everything you'd ever need: cafés, bars, restaurants, grocery stores, bakers, wineries, butchers, doctors, a pharmacy, a hairdressers and more.

Only two miles away, the Canal du Midi runs through the village of Homps, where you can stroll along the banks in the shade of the trees or take a boat trip and relax on the water as you watch the world go by! The Canal du Midi is an UNESCO World Heritage Site - this 360 km network of navigable waterways links the Mediterranean and the Atlantic through 328 locks, aqueducts, bridges and tunnels and is one of the most remarkable feats of civil engineering in modern times. Built between 1667 and 1694, it helped pave the way for the Industrial Revolution.

The village of Minerve is only 20 mins away, and has been selected as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France! Near the village the river disappears underground in a large, naturally-carved tunnel which can be explored by the more adventurous in your group.

Within the village there is a sizeable artistic community and many of their workshops are open to the public.

During the summer season, the Lac de Jouarres has lifeguards and there is a restaurant/snack bar and sun-loungers for public use. You can walk the perimeter of the lake in just over an hour, and the swimming area has been prepared using pebbles and geotextiles to prevent weed growth. The sailing/fishing areas are away from the bathing area, so there's no need to worry about the two activities overlapping! In the summer season, a range of surf board courses is on offer in the sailing area. Only a 25 minute walk away.

Further afield, there's plenty to see and do thanks to range of opportunities for day trips. Try a day in Montpellier, Nîmes or Toulouse or explore the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast to discover ancient castles and picturesque villages that have been untouched by time. Walking and cycling are very popular in the Montagne Noire thanks to the rich diversity of wildlife and scenery. And if you really want to travel, the Spanish border is only an hour and a half away!

For a day on the beach, Narbonne-Plage or Valras-Plage are only a 35 minute drive away.

Customer Reviews

  • It is a very nice house for a holiday with the family. Enjoyed the large kitchen, the garden and the pool. Very private because it is a closed property. The town is small but has the stores needed to get groceries and specially good bread. We used it as a base to visit other places in Languedoc. Claire, the housekeeper was great !! She was very helpful.

  • What a wonderful break in Olonzac. The house is beautiful ; the gardens so peaceful, calming ; and how we enjoyed the wonderful pool. Olonzac proved to be a great place, not only for visiting the surrounding sights by car but also for walks - through the town ; cross country, along the Canal du Midi and around the lake. Claire is a Gem. So discrete but there with a wealth of tips if you need them. Hoping we may return one day. 06/08/2018

  • Me and my family have been to stay for a few years in a row now - it is an absolutely beautiful house in a really lovely town. The garden, aside from being georgeous, is really well laid out - you can swim, sit in the shade, sit on the veranda, play in the games room. My family likes to hang out together, but separately - so we all go and find a corner somewhere in the day and read a book or swim, and then all gather round the table and have a barbeque in the evening. Sometimes we head down to the bar/cafe, or sometimes walk to the restaurants further down the canal. It is so peaceful and isolated in the garden and house, but with lots of things to do close by. Every year we say we will do something adventurous and rent bikes or go down the canal on a boat, but have never got round to it because it is so nice just to be in the garden. I absolutely love this house, and highly recommend staying there! August 2016

  • This property is a grand old lady, gracious, beautifully restored and lovingly cared for. We stayed in the property for 2 weeks to celebrate family birthdays. The home is exactly as the photos portray and lived up to all our expectations. There are many surrounding villages with cafes serving good French food however with a Range to die for, a large well equipped farmhouse style kitchen with good preparation benches, we found ourselves cooking many of the evening meals and wining and dining under the fairy lights in the beautiful gardens. There is an excellent market in the village (5mins walk) every Saturday to purchase good fresh produce and there are plenty of potted herbs in the garden of the villa. Claire the housekeeper is very helpful and has a wicked sense of humour. Would love to return one day. Reviewed 28 August 2018

  • What a absolutley amazing property. Like living a dream. The area of Olonzac is so quiet like time has stood still with just a couple of lovely restaurants. To stay at the house is like being in a film. The stunning rooms and gardens and pool so warm . Clare the fantastic lady who looked after all our needs especially when we needed a doctor, is your point of contact. Nothing was too much trouble. One day I will be back . September 01/09 2018

  • Total privacy with an interior courtyard and upper terrace. The house is clean with lots of storage space for clothes. More room than you could possibly need unless you are a big gang and plan to hang here rather than spend your days sightseeing. Property manager Claire is a treat, ready with other treats for you when you arrive and many reliable suggestions about the town and places to visit nearby or farther afield. This is an old house with modern amenities. You can walk the breadth of the town to any of its cafes, restaurants, and bakeries. The house is handy to Carcassonne and a very quick drive to Minerve, a spectacularly situated village on cliffs. This settlement is a millenium or more old and perches just inside the southern edge of the Massif Central and parklands stretching north from there. If you are hardy walkers, there
are a few short hikes you can take around the town and a longer one of about a few hours along the valley on one side. There is a parking lot you must use just outside the village. If you like to walk and hike,
give it the better part of a day. If you're interested just in the village itself, you need only half a day, as it's quite small. There are a number of cafes and restaurants with stunning views and breezes.
